  • Bentonite

    Bentonite is a clay generated frequently from the alteration of a tuff or volcanic ash, consisting predominantly of smectite minerals, usually montmorillonite. Smectites are clay minerals which consist of individual crystallites that are actually three-layer clay minerals. Common names for smectite include montmorillonite or sodium montmorillonite ("sodium bentonite" or "Wyoming bentonite") and swelling bentonite ("Western bentonite").

    There are three types of bentonite occurring naturally:
    1) Natural Calcium Bentonite,
    2) Natural Sodium Bentonite and
    3) Sodium Activated Bentonites.

    The majority of bentonites that can be find worldwide are calcium bentonites. Calcium bentonites are often characterized by much lower swelling and liquid limit values compared to natural sodium bentonite. Natural sodium bentonites have sodium as the predominant exchange cation and are characterized by high swelling, high liquid limit and high thermal durability. Sodium activated bentonites are produced by the substitution of calcium ions by sodium ions. This transformation can be achieved by the addition of a soluble sodium salt to calcium bentonite.

    The special characteristics of bentonite (swelling, water absorption, viscosity, thixotropy) allow this material to be used in a wide range of industries and applications:

    The Caclite is diagenetically compacted and extremely bright. It comes from The Malm Epsilon bedding in the Swabian Jura and has a carbonate content about 99%. Marble is a metamorphic rock, the product of the transformation of limestone at high pressure and temperature. Deposits of white marble are rare! The marble deposit in Hammerunterwiesenthal in Ore Mountains is over 500 million years old and consists of a fine crystalline structure. It is extremely resistant to weathering, has a low water absorption and a high abrasion resistance.

    Magnesium Hydroxide is a mineral filler used in the manufacturing of halogen free thermoplastic and thermostable compounds in order to obtain flame-resistant properties and low emission of smoke, while also obtaining a reduction in the toxicity of gases given off during combustion.     Calprec PA is a precipitated calcium carbonate with scalenohedral morphology. Its particular structure, purity and size distribution curve enable increased whiteness and opacity when it is used as filler in paper.

    Calprec PA is also especially suitable in paint formulations as an agent that provides hiding power and as high brightness white pigment and therefore used as titanium dioxide extender. For this same reason, it can be used as extender in rigid plastics such as PVC and printing inks.

    Calprec PA E-170 is used in pharma and food industry for its chemical purity.  This product is directly used as a food additive, particularly in snacks or bakery. It can also work as calcium source for toothpaste manufacturers. In the pharmaceutical industry it is used in antibiotics manufactured by fermentation and as an excipient in pharmaceutical tablets. In addition it can be used for latex production.

    Calprec PR is a ultra-fine PCC with spherical shape and special surface coating that allows the product to be integrated perfectly into the formulations. It acts as rheology modifier and improves the mechanical performance of several adhesive and sealants formulations. It is especially useful for hybrid sealants. Other coated products such as Calprec SEAL and PR-G work for hybrid systems as well, but also for silicones, PU and epoxy.

    Calprec PR can work in rigid plastics as impact modifier agent, providing a better quality product, with improved appearance (gloss, surface finish). It works particularly well in PVC profiles.
